Opportunities

GETSEA expands access to Southeast Asian studies by connecting students and scholars across institutions. Our programs create opportunities for specialized coursework, sustained mentorship, and Southeast Asian language study that may not be available at a participant’s home institution.

Explore our core opportunities below.

Mini-Courses

Take a specialized course. Teach something new. Connect across institutions.

GETSEA Mini-Courses are short, virtual courses that bring together graduate students and scholars working across Southeast Asian studies. Courses focus on specialized topics that may not regularly be offered at a student’s home institution and draw participants from a wide range of disciplines and universities.

Graduate students can apply to participate in upcoming courses, while faculty and postdoctoral scholars can propose courses based on their areas of expertise.

Mentoring

Build sustained connections with scholars and peers in your field.

GETSEA’s mentoring programs connect graduate students with faculty and with one another across institutional boundaries.

Our PhD Mentoring Clusters bring together small groups of early-stage doctoral students with a faculty mentor around shared regional, thematic, or methodological interests. Clusters are designed to support intellectual community, professional development, and longer-term mentoring relationships.

GETSEA also offers mentoring and professional development activities through conferences, workshops, and other events.

Language Support

Access Southeast Asian language training beyond your home institution.

In partnership with the Southeast East Asian Language Council (SEALC), GETSEA supports cross-institutional Southeast Asian language study. Tuition assistance is available for eligible students who enroll in synchronous, credit-bearing language courses at North American institutions other than their home institution. Priority is given to graduate students.

The program is designed to make it easier for students to pursue sustained language training even when the courses they need are not offered locally.
